Sale & Swap Archive 2008 Part 1

These are the chess computers sold so far in January - March 2008.

Mephisto Atlanta                 SOLD

Atlanta 1 15 x 15
Atlanta 2 15 x 15
Atlanta 3 15 x 15
Atlanta 4 15 x 15

The Mephisto Atlanta has a strong program by Frans Morsch (best known for the PC program Fritz). Selective Search rates the Atlanta at 2221 Elo which makes it one of the strongest chess computers ever produced. (Link to Selective Search top ratings)

This example is in very good condition, as you can see from the photos. It functions perfectly under mains power or when using 6 x AA batteries (adaptor and batteries not included). A copy of the manual in English is included. A section of the manual in another language can be added if required. The box and lid shown are also included.

Price - £200 (280 Euros)

The item without packaging weighs 2.0 Kg.                                                 12/12/07

Mephisto Berlin 68000           SOLD

Berlin 9 25 x 25
Berlin 3 20 x 20
Berlin 4 15 x 15

The Mephisto Berlin is another strong chess computer, this time with a Richard Lang program. The Selective Search rating is 2126 Elo, although it had a rating against humans of 2221 Elo when the “human” rating was last published in 2005.

This chess computer is in good condition, but it has been well used, hence some of the gold key labels have faded with wear. It still functions fully and beats me easily. It requires mains power and therefore it comes with a suitable adaptor (UK plug). The full 178 page manual in six languages is included. The included chess pieces (as shown) are not original but are very similar to the Mephisto Berlin London pieces that I have, and the Berlin pieces shown on Wiki..

This chess computer might suit somebody who wants plenty of tough games rather than be kept as a collectors piece.

Price - £95 (135 Euros)

The item without packaging weighs 1.95 Kg.                                       12/12/07

Fidelity Champion Sensory Chess Challenger Septennial

A relatively rare chess computer sold in small numbers almost exclusively in the United States. It can be distinguished from the ordinary Champion by the piece symbols on the chessboard, the Septennial stickers on the chess computer and box, and the manual.
The Septennial is about 100 Elo stronger than the Champion (1650 Elo Wiki) and has many more features.

This is a Collectors piece which is in very good condition and is fully working. It comes with the box, styrofoam tray, copy manual, original pieces and adaptor (USA type).

Weight without packaging 2.9 Kg                  SOLD

Fidelity Voice Excellence (Model 6092)

The well known Fidelity Excellence with the addition of speech in four languages - English, German, French and Spanish. The languages are selectable using two switches on the side of the machine. Elo 1784 (Selective Search).

This chess computer is faulty. The rank leds at the side do not function at present. I have not tried a repair though there may have been an attempt before. In other respects it is in very good condition and it is possible to play a full game of chess against it using the file leds and voice.
It comes with the box, manual and original pieces. It works with 4 ‘C’ batteries or adaptor (not included).

Weight without packaging 1.3 Kg                  SOLD

Price - £25

Fidelity Voice Excellence 2 15 x 15
Fidelity Voice Excellence 1 25 x 25

Scisys Chess Companion

Quite an early Scisys and one which is comparatively difficult to find, particularly with the box.

This chess computer is faulty. The sixth rank leds do not work. I have not tried to mend it although the fault is perhaps just one joint requiring resoldering. The chess computer is otherwise in good condition and comes with the box, styrofoam inserts, plus original manual, pieces and adaptor (USA type).

Scisys Rapier

The Scisys Rapier is quite rare. I had been looking for one with no success for two years, when out of the blue a vicar from West Bromwich emailed me offering one, but only the chessboard and pieces. Well I got all enthusiastic and offered him more than it was worth. A week later another showed up on eBay, with the box and manual. That’s collecting! They are difficult to find though.
Hobby/beginner standard chess.

This one is in good condition apart from the mark you see on d5. It is fully working and comes with the chess pieces and copy manual.

Price - £20
SOLD

Scisys Rapier 1 25 x 26

Milton Bradley Phantom

The original Phantom.

Milton Bradley sold their Robot sensation under the name Grandmaster in the USA, and there they are relatively easy to find. In Germany the robot was called Milton, and there are quite a few. But in the UK it was called Phantom and not many were sold. So now they are rare.
José’s Website shows the eBay sales over the last two years. Elo 1500 according to Wiki.

This Phantom is in very good condition. Many MBs have worn and discoloured playing surfaces but this one has had little wear and is still in good condition as the photos show. I have tested the Phantom by playing a game using the sensory surface and also with two Auto games and it works perfectly. It comes with the original power supply (UK plug), original manuals and chess pieces (no crowns). All as shown.

Price - £290                          SOLD

MB Phantom 4 25 x 25 MB Phantom 2 15 x 15
MB Phantom 3 15 x 15
MB Phantom 1 25 x 25

Novag Sensor Dynamic

One of the earliest press sensory chess computers released by Novag, a forerunner to the Constellation. The Sensor Dynamic is quite hard to find, and little information is available about it.

This Sensor Dynamic is in very good fully working condition. It works well with an adaptor, the one which is included has an Australian type plug. A universal type adaptor (9 volts, 500mA, positive centre) is just as good (not supplied). It also works well with 6 ‘C’ batteries, but seems to be sensitive to voltage so rechargeables may not work.

It comes with the box, manual, original pieces in the usual black Novag bag, and the Australian power supply (if you request it).

Price - £20                              SOLD

Novag Sensor Dynamic 1 20 x 20
