CXG Chess 3000 3 25 x 25

CXG Chess 3000

CXG produced a wooden version of its Chess 2001 in 1986, and called it Chess 3000. It has the same buttons and features as the 2001, and an upgraded version of Richard Lang’s Cyrus program. The wooden board is good looking and the chess computer has a nice feel to it. It has an Elo rating of 1500 (Source - Selective Search).

By 1986 the Chess 3000 was getting left behind in terms of playing strength and features and the price was relatively high. So few were sold, apart from in Germany, and it is therefore a fairly rare chess computer.

This Chess 3000 is fully working and comes with the power adaptor and copies of the manual (German) plus a English version of the Chess 2001 manual if required.

Price - £150                  SOLD

Mephisto Nigel Short

You can read about the Mephisto Nigel Short in the ‘Rare’ section of this website (link). They were only sold in the UK and are rarely seen elsewhere. Rated at 1970 Elo (Source - Selective Search) the Nigel Short has an  Ed Schroder program, one of the strongest 8 bit chess programs ever written.

The chess computer for sale is in excellent condition and is functioning perfectly.  It comes with the box and cardboard packaging, manual and all five sets of chesspieces, each with spare queens. So it is as complete and original an example of this rare Mephisto model as you are likely to find.

CompuChess Second Edition

The original CompuChess1 has an important place in early chess computer history. I wrote about it in a Wiki article (link). The CompuChess Second Edition is a rarer version and there is an item on it in the Rare section of this website (link).

The Compuchess Second Edition for sale comes with the integral power supply (Euro plug) and copy manuals in English and German. It is in good working order.

Elektronika IM-01

The Elektronika IM-01 is probably the first all USSR designed and manufactured chess computer to be sold to the public.  It dates from 1986 and seems to be rarer than other Elektronikas. Here is a (link) to my ‘Rare’ section webpage which has information on the IM-01 and other USSR/Russian chess computers.

This IM-01 is fully working and comes with the set of pieces shown in the photos and a copy of the manual. There are some scratches on the playing surface, which are shown on the photo, and the rear piece compartment lid is missing.

Fidelity Sensory Chess Challenger 9

This is a Sensory 9A. Distinguished by the USCF 1771 rating reference on the original box. It seems there are at least four different software versions of the ‘9’ in circulation.

The ‘9A’, which dates from 1982, is by far the most common version but a very nice machine to play in any case. The current Elo rating is 1528 (Source - Selective Search).

This chess computer comes complete with the box, styrofoam tray, manual, adaptor (UK plug), and pieces. It is in full working order and can also run on 4 ‘C’ batteries.

SciSys Electronic Trio 1 15 x 15

The Electronic Trio dates from 1985 which, I think, makes it the earliest portable chess computer to play other games at the flick of a switch. It also plays Checkers (Draughts) and Tic-Tac-Toe (Noughts and Crosses).

Contrary to first impressions, that this is a cheap mass market toy built in large quantities, the Electronic Trio is actually quite hard to find in the UK. It has programs by Julio Kaplan/Craig Barnes.

FAULTY
PORTABLES

Novag 2Robot

This Novag 2Robot comes with the manual, chesspieces, adaptor (Euro plug), box and all the original packaging, . It is complete and in mint condition. However it has the same fault that many of the early 2Robots suffered from, namely an Arm Error, where in response to an opening move the arm moves out to take up the piece but the ‘grabber’ does not descend. This fault is repairable.  Unfortunately I do not have the knowhow to repair it myself. According to the manual the 2Robot can play chess with the arm disabled.

It is offered for repair or parts.
